About Ghettochopped

Ghettochopped exists because chopped and screwed music deserves the same care people give jazz, blues or any other American sound with a hometown. DJ Screw built it on turntables in Houston in the 1990s. The Screwed Up Click rapped over it. Slabs carried it down MLK, Cullen and the rest of the South Side. Then it spread far enough that a lot of people now hear slowed music online without knowing where it came from.

We want to close that gap. Every story here starts from the same idea: slow the sound down enough and you hear the culture differently.

Who this is for

Houston music fans who lived it. Southern rap fans from Memphis to New Orleans to Atlanta who want their own scenes covered right. DJs and young producers learning the technique. Mixtape collectors, car-culture folks, streetwear people, and music writers who want a source that names its sources.

What we cover

Six sections hold most of the work: Chopped & Screwed, Houston Hip-Hop, DJ Screw Legacy, Southern Rap, Mixtapes, DJs. Around them you’ll find producer profiles, album artwork, car culture, SLAB history, street fashion and music technology. Everything is filed in Slow Roll, our blog.

How we write and check stories

We stick to what can be verified. Names, dates, places and release details get checked against published sources, and we link to those sources where we can. Opinion is labeled as opinion. We don’t fabricate interviews or quotes, we don’t invent artist histories, and we don’t copy lyrics beyond short fair-use references.

We also don’t host or link to unauthorized albums or bootleg downloads. When music is officially available, we point you to it. We don’t glorify drug use, and we don’t reduce Houston to purple-drink imagery. The headlines from other publications that appear around the site belong to those publishers and link straight back to them.
